Frequently asked questions about Dunefox
How does WhatsApp Business API pricing work?
WhatsApp Business API uses a conversation-based pricing model. Each conversation is a 24-hour messaging window between you and a customer. Conversations are categorised into four types: Marketing (promotional messages and offers), Utility (order confirmations, shipping updates), Authentication (OTPs and verification codes), and Service (customer-initiated support). Each category has different pricing, and rates vary by country. This calculator helps you estimate your monthly cost based on your specific conversation mix.
What is the difference between business-initiated and user-initiated conversations?
Business-initiated conversations (Marketing, Utility, Authentication) start when you send a template message to a customer outside an active 24-hour window. These require pre-approved message templates and are charged at higher rates. User-initiated conversations (Service) start when a customer messages you first, opening a free 24-hour reply window. Service conversations are the cheapest category and are free for the first 1,000 per month.
Are the first 1,000 service conversations really free?
Yes. Meta provides every WhatsApp Business API account with 1,000 free service conversations per month. These are user-initiated conversations where the customer messages you first. This allowance resets on the first of each month. Our calculator automatically deducts these free conversations from your total cost estimate.
How accurate is this WhatsApp API pricing calculator?
This calculator uses Meta's official published rates as of June 2026. Prices are updated quarterly when Meta revises their pricing. The estimates are accurate for standard WhatsApp Business API usage through any BSP (Business Solution Provider). Actual costs may vary slightly based on your BSP's markup, volume discounts, or special agreements. For enterprise-grade pricing, contact Dunefox for a custom quote.
Which countries have the cheapest WhatsApp API pricing?
WhatsApp API pricing varies significantly by country. Generally, countries in South Asia (India, Indonesia) and parts of Africa have the lowest rates, while North America and Western Europe have higher rates. India, being one of the largest WhatsApp markets, has some of the most competitive pricing globally. Use the country selector in this calculator to compare rates across different markets.
How can I reduce my WhatsApp Business API costs?
There are several strategies to optimise your WhatsApp API costs: (1) Maximise your free 1,000 service conversations by encouraging customers to message you first, (2) Use AI automation like Dunefox to resolve queries within the 24-hour window, reducing the need for follow-up template messages, (3) Consolidate messages within active conversation windows instead of opening new ones, (4) Use Utility templates instead of Marketing templates where appropriate, as they are cheaper, and (5) Segment your audience to avoid sending marketing messages to uninterested users.
What is a BSP and do I need one for WhatsApp Business API?
A BSP (Business Solution Provider) is a company authorised by Meta to provide access to the WhatsApp Business API. You cannot access the API directly from Meta. You need a BSP like Dunefox. BSPs provide the technical infrastructure, message delivery, template management, and support. Dunefox goes beyond basic BSP services by adding AI chatbots, team inbox, analytics, and campaign automation on top of the API.
What is the WhatsApp conversation window and why does it matter for pricing?
The conversation window is a 24-hour session that begins when either party sends the first message. Within this window, you can send unlimited messages without incurring additional conversation charges. Once the 24-hour window closes, sending any new message opens a new chargeable conversation. For cost optimisation, it is important to batch all your messages, support replies, follow-ups, and updates, within an active window rather than sending them hours apart.
Does WhatsApp API pricing change between countries?
Yes, significantly. WhatsApp API conversation rates are set country-by-country by Meta. For example, Marketing conversations in India cost around $0.0115, while the same conversation in the USA costs $0.025. Authentication conversations tend to be cheapest across all markets. This country-based pricing means businesses with global audiences need to calculate costs separately for each major market. Our calculator supports 50+ country pricing tiers.
Are there any free conversations or trials with WhatsApp Business API?
Meta provides two types of free allowances: (1) 1,000 free service conversations per month (user-initiated), which never expires and resets monthly. (2) New WhatsApp Business API accounts may receive a limited number of free template messages as part of onboarding. Additionally, some BSPs like Dunefox offer a free trial period that includes a conversation credit so you can test the API before committing to a paid plan.
How does Meta charge for authentication (OTP) conversations?
Authentication conversations are the most cost-effective category in WhatsApp API pricing, typically 60–80% cheaper than Marketing conversations in the same country. They are billed per conversation (24-hour window), not per message. You can send multiple OTP or verification codes within the same window at no extra cost. Authentication templates must contain a verification code and follow Meta's strict OTP template format. No promotional content is allowed.
Can this calculator estimate yearly WhatsApp API costs?
Yes. After entering your monthly conversation volumes, the calculator shows both your estimated monthly cost and an annualised projection (monthly cost × 12). For seasonal businesses, we recommend calculating peak-month costs and multiplying by the appropriate number of high-volume months. Remember that Meta periodically revises conversation pricing, so treat annual projections as estimates. Check back quarterly to update your numbers with the latest rates.
